Two dinner plate-sized sea turtles, who were swept up and injured during sand dredging for the recent beach renourishment project, have been saved.

The two Kemp’s ridley turtles, about 5 to 6 years old, are swimming comfortably now in their individual watery containers on Front Beach Road, waiting to be reintroduced into the wild, Gulf World experts said Thursday.

When over 1 million cubic yards of sand are dredged from the Gulf bottom, such as was needed during the recent $13.5 million Bay County beach renourishment project, sea turtles sometimes can get caught up in the work, although various layers of protection are used. The creatures often die, said Lisa Armbruster, the Bay County Tourist Development Council’s beach consultant.

Pam George, Gulf World marketing director, said the turtles were taken to St. Andrews Marina and then picked up by the Gulf World “stranding van.” Besides sea turtles, the facility also is set up to care for dolphins and small whales.

“The animals are very well taken care of here,” she said.
