The Sports Events Media Group has named the Panama City Beach CVB Sports Marketing with its annual “Reader’s Choice Award of Excellence” for exhibiting professionalism, creativity and dedication in the sports event planning industry. Based on reader nominations throughout 2011-and after more than 3,000 votes- Sports Events readers recognized Panama City Beach CVB as representing one of the most sports-friendly destination in the country. Readers were asked to select their top choices for the awards based on a number of factors, including quality of service, hospitable atmosphere, physical amenities, sports venues, and more. This marks the 2ND time in the past three years that the Panama City Beach CVB has been awarded this honor. The annual “Sports Workshop” took place on February 15 at the Frank Brown Park gym. There were 30 event-right-holders representing over 70 events in attendance. Several community businesses took advantage of this unique opportunity to network one-on-one with the event-rights-holders. Several new relationships were formed as a result. January 31, through March 10, the “Golf Mystery Challenge” was promoted by Sports Marketing. Challenges were held at several community golf courses. The challenges included longest drive, closest to the pin, and /or longest putt geared towards the winter resident. The winter resident was unaware of what day, what course, or what challenge was taking place in advance. They were also asked to fill out”Golfer Profile Cards” so that we could have a better understanding of the winter resident and their likes. Over 600 cards were collected. Random drawings were made from the cards. Over 150 individuals won prizes from the draw and all challenge winners received prizes. The winter residents have been very appreciative of our golf initiative of showing our appreciation to them making Panama City Beach their winter residence. The NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association)/ NAIA Women’s Collegiate Fastpitch “LeadoffClassic” was able to brave the weather challenges of this past Saturday and complete the event on Sunday. Sixteen (16) NAIA schools were represented in the event. These teams came from the states of Alabama, Arkansas, South Florida (2), Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Tennessee (3). In February we also worked with Arnold High School in promoting and establishing the first annual”Florida-Alabama High School Fastpitch Challenge”. This was a very successful first year effort and we expect the number of the teams participating to grow in 2013. The Gulf Coast State College Women’s Collegiate fastpitch “Beach Classic” was held in conjunction with the high school event. In all twenty-four (24) teams (15 high school/9 collegiate) competed. We hope to separate the two events in 2013. Gulf Coast State College continues to host several out of area teams in their baseball “Spring Classic”that runs March 1 – 10. Panhandle conference play begins March 14, for the men’s baseball team and March 15, for the women’s fastpitch softball team. Both programs are off to an excellent start. Coach Roonie Scovel, of the Gulf Coast State College women’s basketball program, will step down after this season and take a position as an academic advisor with the college. Currently she has a career record of 459-59 in the 16 years at GCSC. She has national titles in 2003, 2008, and 2010. The Lady Commodore’s are currently 22 – 4 and playing in the state tournament this week. She has 13 conference titles to date. She is also in the National Basketball Hall of Fame on the JUCO level. We wish her the best for the future and thank her for all of her accomplishments and commitment to the community.
